HANDS-ON QGIS WORKSHOP

(By: Gresal Tapulao | Fast-cilitators) The FASTcilitators or the NEDA2-Former Australian Students Team conducted training on QGIS for Cauayan City Team on January 23, 2015 at the Isabela Hotel, Cauayan City.

The activity is part of our Team's commitment to transfer knowledge to our city counterpart in the on-going Alumni Grant Scheme (AGS)-assisted disaster risk and vulnerability assessment project for the City.  The activity is designed to equip our LGU partners with the use of Quantum GIS as the assessment process utilizes GIS tools for mapping, consequence and risk analyses. It is imperative for our city counterpart to fully comprehend the process not only for the whole team to have a common framework and understanding of the process but also to prepare them for the eventual turn-over of the digital database developed by the project for their planning, disaster response and other related activities at the end of project.

HANDS-ON QGIS WORKSHOP

The workshop rolled well with the enthusiasm and active participation of the City team headed by Mr. Oliver Francisco, the City Planning and Development Coordinator (CPDC) n the use of QGIS. The software including a customized manual was installed on individual laptops for the participants to discover other features, tools and functions on their own.

The activity, which  was participated in by the Local Chief Executive (LCE)-designate Cauayan City team composed of the City Division Chiefs and select technical staff, provided opportunity for everyone to learn the software, clarify questions and get tips from the group. It was a satisfying activity as our team was able to share our knowledge, skills and Australian education which will benefit the city government and its constituents.

At the end of the day, with the workshop objectives attained, the entire team is enthusiastically confident on moving forward with the next steps of the assessment process with a GIS equipped City Team and members with common framework and understanding with our on going assessment process.
