Australian Government Scholar Appointed to UN Human Rights Body
(6 November 2014) The United Nations Human Rights Council appointed today Australian Government scholar and Philippine human rights lawyer, Atty. Ricardo A. Sunga III, as a Member of the United Nations Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. This position belongs to the same category as United Nations Special Rapporteurs. These special procedures mandate-holders are chosen for their expertise in the field of international human rights law. They are also called charter-based mandates, because they trace their authority ultimately to the United Nations Charter. The particular Working Group, to which Atty. Sunga was appointed, considers issues of racial discrimination against people of African descent, living in countries outside of Africa, like in Europe, Asia and America.

Atty. Sunga is the Regional Coordinator for the Free Legal Assistance Group, the oldest organization of human rights lawyers in the Philippines. Atty. Sunga previously taught human rights law at the University of the Philippines College of Law. He currently serves as a Law Reform Specialist of the University of the Philippines Institute of Human Rights. He had obtained a Master of Law by Research degree from the University of New South Wales on an Australian Leadership Award Scholarship in 2011.
